RE: 36' or 40'

If you think 40' is too big, it is. If you think 36' is too small, it is. You're the only one who can decide what's right for you.
I think the above quote says it all and in very few words. we started out w/ a 36 and 2 years later bought a new 40--4 slide. BUT, we spend about 6 months over a year in ours and like the extra space. I just depends on what kind of things you are doing and how much space it takes to keep yorr wife happy. And YES you will be limited to the larger state parks with a 40'
Buy your last coach first, it will save you big $$$

RE: Cummins Catastrophe Update

If you have an exhust brake & the fan is a side mount you can have it programmed to come on w/ the ex. brake which significantly increases retardation. If it is a true "Jake" brake or you have a rear radiator, this does not apply.

RE: Economy forces Class A rethink!

All of the below advice and DRIVE both, look at the quality, and than make up your mind. Remember, you are buying a depreciating asset so you really do need to buy what you are going to want to keep for a long time. Personally, I would prefer an older diesel in your price range to a newer gasser. Especially since you state you are going to be full timing.

P.S. DeMartini is a stand up outfit, I have bought two coaches from them and never regretted doing business with them.

RE: how fast

Always towing, so, 60 or less while in Ca. and 65 or less when in states with higher speed limits. I get about 1/2 MPG btter fuel economy at 60 or less, but when the speed limit is 70 for evrybody, I find 65 is more compatable with most other traffic flow.
What ever works !

RE: Has anyone regretted going bigger?

Just checked with my wife and she assures me that size really does matter......LOL
There is an old saying attributed to wome woman "you can never be too thin or have too much money".
Men now say " your motorhome can never be too long or have too much horsepower".

RE: Unexpected Weight Imbalance -- Problem?

I wish that someone would cite just ONE example of a motorhome owner being cited for being 170 lbs. (or even 500 # ) overweight. In most states, trucks would not be bothered for this and they are weighed. Motorhomes are never weighed and even if they were this is not going to be an issue. As far as worrying about getting sued if you have an accident and are overweight by JUST ONE PESON tell them that the person was in the back--or front--or whatever. They are never going to be able to prove anything.

RE: Has anyone regretted going bigger?

Joyce;
I agree that going form 38 to 40 isn't worth it. But, going to 42 or 45 is a big step in cost, maintenance, and 38's can go many places that 42 or 44 can't. I guess it just comes down to how much money yu have to spend and do you use the moho enough to warrant the expenditure. We went from 36 to 40 and this will be our last coach. (I did say that when we got the 36") We spend from a total of 5 to 6 months (spread over the year) in ours, so at least we are using it.

RE: running furnace while driving?

You didn't tell us what coach you are driving, which would help. Many coaches don't have a problem, some do.

RE: Unexpected Weight Imbalance -- Problem?

If it were me I would move what you can forward and not worry one bit about 170 lbs. or even 500 lbs. Inter-city buses are NEVER weighed and ALWAYS loaded unevenly. They carry tons of baggage, always loaded helter-skelter.
Good tire care and realistic safe driving will overcome 500 lbs any day of the week. As far as liability for an extra 170 lbs, how will they ever prove what your rig weighed on the day of the accident? Do whatever makes YOU feel confortable and don't worry what every one else thinks.

RE: Has anyone regretted going bigger?

There are some roads in CA that a 42' can not go on. They are listed on Cal-trans web site. I've never regretted going bigger. You only live once so if you can afford it. Do it.
Has ANYONE with a 42 or 44 foot coach EVER been stopped for being on a road that was limited to <40 feet? I would not let that stop me if I wanted a 42 or 44.
What would stop me is the additional cost, both purchase and maintenance, for very little additional space. AND, less basement storage than most 40 foot two axles. IMHO, The new 40' coaches handle better than the old 42 and 44's.
In the end, buy what will make your wife happy, and you will be happy

RE: Overnighting in Flying J??

When I look at the cost of owning and using a motorhome, the cost of an RV park is not going to bust my budget. Eating in is about the same price as buying dinner and than a free nights stay, and the food is better. I have tried truck stops and rest area's and have never got a good nights sleep in one of them. I guess if I was still working, on a tight time frame, and only going to spend a few hours it might be OK, but now that I am retired I enjoy myself and am usually parked by 4:00 and don't get out again until 9 ish. To each his own.

RE: exercising MH during winter

MOST beleive that the diesel engine (or gas) is better served if you only start it if you will be driving the moho long enough to get everything up to operating temp.

Surge and voltage protection systems

I would like to do a quick and dirty survey to find out how many of you have a protection system (like Progressive) Just a YES or NO. We all know which one we would buy and why, but I want to know how many have ponyed up $325 bucks for one.
Thanx

RE: How to up keep diesel engine over the winter???

The engine doesn't know (or care) if it is warm or cold UNLESS you are trying to start it. I am quite sure that CAT will tell you NOT tostart the engine unless you are going to drive the coach and get it up to operating temp. Otherwise, you will just create moisture/condensation in the sump. That is not a good thing and the engine will be just fine as long as you have proper antifreeze. It isn't a dog or a cat, more like a polar bear.

Thanx everyone for your comments and now (Thanx to Randy) I have to think about some slacker loping off my power cord, SS and all. I just have to hope he doesn't have the sense to unplug it before he starts to cut it.

RE: Progressive Surge protectors

Thanx Dave;
My one reservation is that we spend the winter in a park with old wiring and historic low voltage problems at times. Is there a way to turn off the (hard wired) unit if it is constantly tripping. Yes, I know, this defeats the purpose of having it. With the portable uhnit, you could just disconnect it if you had to.
Also, if the unit blows due to a surge, and you have to send it back for repairs, you are without electricty until you get it back. Not so with the portable unit. (I have to cut off the factory lugs to install the heard wired unit)
